Kevin and Avonte’s Law
Autism Speaks was the leading force in national legislation that would provides family and first responder training and technologies to all families, including low income areas, that focus on bringing individuals with autism that wander home safely. Wandering is one of the primary fears of autism parents through the legislation no families were left behind in the solutions.
Infant Brain Imaging Study (IBIS)
The newest study out of IBIS found early differences in the growth rate of the brain that distinguished which infants at high risk for autism would develop the condition. The method could become the first to accurately predict autism in the first year of life, down from age 4. Early detection is critical to enable behavioral treatment for high-risk babies.
Autism Speaks was a pivotal part of the funding of this research through a 2.5-million-dollar grant. IBIS is also part of the Autism Speaks Baby Siblings Research Consortium. “The results of this new analysis are directly in line with our organization’s goal to lower the age of autism diagnosis to enable earlier intervention,” comments Mathew Pletcher, Autism Speaks.
