Bike to the Beach is co-hosting our first iCan Bike program in the Annapolis and Baltimore area kids and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)! The program is being co-hosted with two of our amazing non-profit partners: iCan Shine and Rise for Autism.
iCanBike is a bike training program for kids and adults with disabilities to teach them to learn how to ride a bike and gain independence through transportation. This will be our first iCanBike program in the Annapolis and Baltimore area.
iCanBike uses bicycles that have been modified to help ease the process of learning how to ride a bike independently. The back tire is switched out with a wide roller that gets progressively smaller as the rider progresses in skill. Eventually, the rider will be able to ride on his/her own bike with assistance if needed.
Almost 80% of all riders who participate in an iCanBike program learn to ride a two-wheel bike independently. Graduates from the program also receive free registration to Bike to the Beach’s Family Challenge Ride, an 8-mile bike ride to the finish line. By learning how to ride a bike through iCanBike, one can join the Rise for Autism Bike team.
The training ride starts on the 18th of July and continues to July 22nd with multiple session throughout the day to fit any busy schedule!
