Inclusion is very important to Ibby. Not just at school, but in his community. It’s also important for those around him (and all of us) to learn that having a disability doesn’t mean you are invisible, helpless, or belong in a separate place.
Ibby is a Boy Scout (and proudly his patrol elected him Patrol Leader this year – they get it!). His advancement is slow, and he still needs support and patience, but he enjoys being a part of Boy Scouts and getting that time with his friends. Yes, those boys are his friends. They get him, they support him without being prompted, and they appreciate him. (Notice they appreciate him – it’s important to move beyond awareness!)
That is why inclusion is so important to EVERYONE, so we see the person not the disability!
