Organizational Success Story: Girls Group
According to the CDC, autism is four to five times more likely in boys than girls; which is reflected in the student population at Crossroads- only 11 of our 61 students are female. To provide our female students with opportunities to partake in typical activities for girls that promote independence and confidence, Samantha Baxter, ABA-Counselor, established “Girls’ Group.”
“The goal of Girls’ Group is to provide a fun and educational place for our girls to be girls and learn what that means for each of them. The vision of girls group is to provide these students with a safe and comfortable learning environment to understand femininity. The girls meet each week and learn about healthy eating, exercise, hygiene, cooking, and other fun activities,” Baxter shared.
In addition to the planned lessons, Girls’ Group also presents our female students with opportunities to work on their Social Skills. During their time together each week, they interact with girls of different ages and from other classrooms; additionally, they work with different teachers than they do on a daily basis in their classroom.
